Am Stram Gram is a children’s theater located in Eaux-Vives, Geneva, that opened its doors in 1992. Hidden behind a modest, historic facade, the building descends four stories into the earth and includes multiple theater spaces and public areas that serve the local community. Over the course of a week, Sapid Studio led a workshop with students from HEAD-Genève to collectively investigate and reimagine the main theater’s bar and grand hall area.

The project’s aim was for students to work in teams to develop four different design proposals that respond to the grand hall’s required functions, which include a bar/cafe, waiting and coat check area, and a makeshift classroom for workshops & presentations. The teams were provided with four conceptual themes of Plug-In, Module, Mobile and Ecosystem in an effort to create a wide-ranging group of proposals for the Am Stram Gram team to envision the possibilities within the space.

The resulting projects aim to provide a series of spatial devices and strategies to re-imagine the grand hall and the potential of the space to host a multitude of functions. Each project challenges ergonomic norms, inclusivity & collectivity in its own way, in an effort to breathe new life into this area by creating playful and unexpected design interventions. As part of the workshop, each team produced scale drawings, a 1:50 model and a 1:1 mock-up, in order to pitch their ideas to the theater at the conclusion of the workshop.
